If you're providing a urine sample (common for chlamydia and gonorrhea), try not to urinate for at least 1 to 2 hours beforehand, or as advised by the clinic, to ensure an adequate sample.
Certain swab tests are easier to perform when you're not on your period. Inform your provider about your cycle for optimal timing.
Be ready to discuss any symptoms you're experiencing and details about your recent sexual activity. This helps the provider tailor the tests and offer appropriate care.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)—also known as Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)—are infections that are primarily spread through sexual contact due to the exchange of bodily fluids. This includes vaginal, anal, or oral sex. STDs can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites, and they may affect anyone who is sexually active.
STDs include:

You should consider getting screened or tested for STDs if you suspect you’ve been exposed, have had sexual contact with someone recently diagnosed with an STD, or if you begin to notice any symptoms. Keep in mind that it's possible to carry an STD without showing any clear signs or symptoms.
Men and women may experience different symptoms when infected with STDs, and in some cases, they may not have any symptoms at all. The way STDs present can vary due to anatomical and hormonal differences.

Male patients are typically required to provide a urine and a blood sample, while female patients will require a swab test along with a blood sample.
During the consultation, your healthcare provider may also ask about your sexual history, including recent partners and encounters. All information shared is strictly confidential and handled with care and discretion.

HIV testing is conducted via a blood sample, through either a laboratory or rapid test.
While there is no cure for HIV, early detection and prompt initiation of treatment can allow individuals to lead normal, fulfilling lives. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) reduces the virus to undetectable levels, preventing the progression to AIDS and lowers the risk of transmission to others.
Peace of Mind
Knowing your STI/STD status can relieve anxiety and provide clarity in your sexual health.
Regular testing ensures you're informed and empowered about your health.
Early Detection of Infections
Screening helps identify STIs early, often before symptoms appear. This allows for timely treatment, minimises unpleasant symptoms and reduces the risk of long-term health complications.
Prevention of Transmission
Regular screening helps reduce the spread of infections to partners.
Because symptoms can be mild, mistaken for other conditions, or completely absent, regular screening is crucial for sexually active individuals.
Reduced Risk of Complications
Many STIs, if left untreated, can lead to severe health problems, such as infertility, chronic pain, and increased vulnerability to HIV. Screening ensures that infections are treated before they escalate into serious issues.
Better Pregnancy Outcomes
STIs like syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia can lead to complications during pregnancy, including premature birth, low birth weight, or transmission to the baby. Screening before or during pregnancy ensures that any infections are detected and treated to protect both mother and child.
Improved Sexual Health
Getting screened helps foster a culture of openness and responsibility in sexual relationships. It encourages communication between partners and helps ensure mutual health and safety.

Safe sexual practices significantly reduce the risk of contracting STDs.
